The situation
More than 77% of the families live under the poverty line with an annual income of less than 24.000 Rupies (433 Euros). The unemployment rate is very high. The main bread winners of the families get only 100 to 200 days work in a calendar year as daily wage earners or agriculture labourers. More than 72% of the families face food scarcity with the effect that in tense times they have to get loans from local money lenders at high interest rates. 81% of the families have no access to sanitary facilities. Many children suffer from diseases and malnutrition. Around 30% of the children in the age group of 6 to 14 drop out of school.
